One Tiny (But Not So Tiny) Thing You Can Do This International Women's Day
A plea from me: please stop apologising for the way you look
This is a spontaneous International Women’s Day post because frankly, I’m so sick of women apologising for the way they look before they speak. I know there are bigger things to talk about but this is what is on my mind.
You never need to apologise for what you look like.
You never need to justify your body to anyone.
You are allowed to show up without a disclaimer.
Pass it on. Tell a friend.
So many empowering things were said this week but you diminish it if you continue to make fat jokes, belittle your appearance and justify the way you look. I understand we all have insecurities but when we start conversations that way, we teach little girls that they still have to stay humble to be liked and fuck that frankly. Men don’t need to be humble or try to remain relatable to be respected.
Too many times this week, before a woman opens her mouth whether it be online or in real life, they start with an apology about the way they look. And it needs to stop. This week alone I’ve seen people apologise for not wearing makeup, their hair being wet, looking tired, being a mess. Just stop. We don’t need to be ‘presentable’ (whatever that means) to be heard. If we are still living in a world where a woman has to look a certain way to be respected, then we are missing the point. We should listen to everyone regardless of their appearance.
Lots of love,
M xx
Oh god, I am definitely guilty of this
Thanks for saying it! Years ago I noticed a friend was apologising for talking to me (as if I didn't care to listen) and I told her that next time she could thank me for listening instead. We joked about it and how great I was at listening, and what a modest friend I was, but it did stick :)
